Setting Career Goals
Setting career goals is probably something we will do more than once in our lives.
Some of you know the exact position you want, even the company you want to work for. That was easy. It wasn't like that for me so I actually tried many different things: sales, automotive parts, and childcare, to name a few not so successful ones. So how did I end up being an accountant? I started by asking myself some questions: Where do I want to work? Am I willing to go to university? Do I want to travel with my job? Is there something I am really good at? Do I like working with people, or by myself? What type of income do I want? What are my interests? Is there something I have always wanted to try?
Answering these questions gave me ideas for careers I might be interested in. Then I started researching each one. Did it look like something I would like? Were there opportunities in this field? What type of training would I require? Eventually I decided on accounting. I am still very happy with my choice 15 years later.Setting career goals can take some time, but it is worth it. You are going to be doing this for a while so if you plan to invest time training or going to school, make sure it is something you're passionate about. I have seen too many people who are in jobs where they are unhappy and feel trapped for various reasons. There is always a choice, another opportunity, something better. Write down what your dream job is and what working for the perfect company would be like. Its that simple. Keep working on these goals until you have a career choice that makes you happy and is fulfilling.
