Successful Goal Setting - What do you Really Want?

The importance of goal setting is defined by the quality of your life. If your life is fulfilling and exactly the way you want it, you probably aren't reading this. If you believe there is more to life and just aren't sure how to get it, goal setting is important. I believe you make your own destiny.

Steps to Goal Setting

When I first asked myself “what do I really want?”, there were so many things going through my head andthere were so many things I wanted that I found it overwhelming. To make it all more manageable I broke my list down into life sections.

Personal

Money

Health & Fitness

Career

Having Fun

Lifestyle

For each section I brainstormed and made a list of everything I wanted in that area of my life. There is only one rule DREAM BIG if you are going to have a goal, it may as well be something you REALLY WANT. Here are some of my goals (I always find an example helps):

Personal Goals

Speak Spanish, remember names, overcome my fear of snorkeling, learn how to bake, find my perfect partner, learn to golf

Money Goals

Next year double my yearly income, retire at 50, pay the maximum yearly amount on my mortgage

Health & Fitness Goals

Become a runner, stop snacking in the evening, learn yoga, get a massage once a month

Career & Job Goals

Be an entrepreneur, become comfortable with public speaking, take two courses a year

Having Fun Goals

Kayak off the coast of British Columbia, hike in Peru, meditate with monks, helicopter ride over a glacier

Life Style Goals

Live in the country, build my 2500 square foot bungalow, Drive a BMW

If you are having trouble defining your goals there are more details on successful goal setting in the above links. Don't get stuck, you can always add to your list. I find my goals continually evolve.

If you're like me, there are a lot of things on your list. Wow, it felt overwhelming again, so I took each section and broke it down further into time frames.

I like to set more specific goals for the coming year. Some people like to set six month goals but you may prefer goals for two years. Decide what time frame works for you, then take each section and refine your list further. Which goals are most important? I like to have at least two goals in each section that I believe I can accomplish in the next year.

Now you have a list of goals and a time frame in which to realize them. So what's next? It's time for goal achievement.

There are many different methods I have used to help me with Goal Realization. Try them all, as some may work better that others for you. Use Whatever feels right.
